History of Chesapeake
Chesapeake’s history has played a significant role in the development of the USA. In 1620, the early settlers arrived. The settlers in Chesapeake celebrated the victory at the 1775 Battle of Great Bridge, which led to the removal of British Government traces from the Colony of Virginia. In 1790s, the Dismal Swamp Canal was built, through which Chesapeake came into picture as a commerce center. It is the oldest used man-made canal in the US today and served as the main waterway route during the Civil War. After the Civil War, the Chesapeake area grew because of access to waterways and lush farmlands. The Chesapeake area was formally incorporated as the City of Chesapeake in 1963. Today, Chesapeake is a prosperous, modern metro city listed among the “Top 100 Best Places to live” in the United States.
